- This section appears in Section C Paper 1 of the PMR examination paper. It tests students' command of the language.
- There are six questionson phrasal verbs and idiomatic expression. The types of idiomatic expressions tested include idioms and proverbs.
- There are two sets of dialogues or short texts given. Students are required to figure out the meaning of the expression.
- Each dialogue is followed by a set of 3-4options for each underlined expression. Students are required to choose the meaning that best fits each of the underlined expressions.
TIPS AND TECHNIQUES
- Read the conversation carefully and try to understand the situation. Pay special attention to the underlined expressions.
- The important points to note are:
· the topic of the conversation
· the people of the conversation
· the relationship between the speakers
· the context of the conversation
i. the speakers’ past action
ii. the speakers’ future action
- Look at the options and choose the best one.
- You can start by eliminating the options that are clearly wrong.
- You must remember that some expression have underlying meanings. They are not as straightforward as they seem. For example:
Azizah: Don’t lose heart. You can try out for the championships again next year.
In this context, the expression ‘lose heart’ is an idiom. It means to feel discouraged to lose motivation.
- If you find it difficult to understand the expressions, look for clues in:
· the topic of the conversation
· the context of the conversation
· the lines before and after the underlined expressions
- Once you have chosen an answer, check if it is correct by replacing the underlined expression with the chosen answer. Make sure that the conversation makes sense.
